What is MOTS-c
MOTS-c is a short mitochondrial peptide consisting of 16 amino acids, which is encoded by mitochondrial DNA. This peptide has been investigated in recent years as a potential regulator of metabolism, cellular protection and signaling between mitochondria and the nucleus. Due to its ability to influence AMPK pathways and metabolic homeostasis, it is considered a promising research target in areas such as obesity, insulin resistance and mitochondrial dysfunction.
Effects investigated
- Improvement of insulin sensitivity: Activation of AMPK promotes glucose transport into cells without the need for insulin.
- Reduction of fat mass: Support of fat oxidation and inhibition of their synthesis.
- Protection of mitochondria: Improvement of mitochondrial function and prevention of their damage.
- Endurance and physical performance: Increase in aerobic capacity in preclinical models.
- Resistance to cellular stress: Effect on antioxidant and cytoprotective pathways.
How MOTS-c works
MOTS-c acts through the activation of AMPK, which leads to increased fatty acid oxidation, reduced lipid synthesis and improved insulin sensitivity. At the same time, the mTOR signaling pathway is inhibited, thereby increasing cellular resistance to stress. In models of metabolic syndrome, a positive effect on blood glucose reduction, fat mass loss and improved physical performance has been demonstrated.
Dosage in studies
- Dose: 5–15 mg daily
- Form of administration: intraperitoneal or subcutaneous injection (in animal models)
- Frequency: 1× daily
- Duration: 7–30 days depending on the study
MOTS-c is a mitochondrially derived peptide that is produced by transcription of a short open reading frame (sORF) in mitochondrial DNA. It is currently the subject of intensive research, particularly for its ability to influence metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and cellular stress responses.
